Open Innovation Journey

The Open Innovation Journey (OIJ) by ENoLL empowers European cities in establishing Energy Communities through open innovation principles and Living Labs. Inspired by William Chesbrough's seminal concept, OIJ fosters innovation by harnessing ideas from both internal and external sources, ensuring that innovation is accessible to all stakeholders.

This methodology guides you through seven pivotal steps, from defining the purpose of the Energy Community to formulating a comprehensive implementation plan for delivering green solution packages and smart energy services. These steps are:

  • Purpose: Why do we want to support the set-up of an energy community? OR Why do we want to set up an energy community?
  • SWOT Analysis: Which are our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in setting up an energy community in our context?
  • COCD Box (How, Now, Wow Matrix: Which are the needed solutions?
  • Stakeholder Mapping: Who are the stakeholders needed to fullfil the purpose?
  • Power Vs Interest Matrix: How can our stakeholders influence our project?
  • OIJ & Validation: Who will be our final users and how to interact with them to develop the required solutions?
  • Implementation Plan: Which are the activities that need to be performed to successfully set up and run the Energy Community?

The OIJ methodology is designed to be adaptable for both in-person and virtual settings, providing detailed descriptions and clear instructions for each step within an 8-hour timeframe. While it is recommended to follow the methodology step by step, each component can also be used as a stand-alone tool, allowing flexibility to address specific needs as they arise. This modular approach ensures that cities can tailor their co-creation processes according to their unique challenges while still benefiting from a structured framework.
